October 13, 2023 Statement on Israel/Palestine

Disciples Peace Fellowship grieves the loss of all lives, Israeli and Palestinian alike, from the recent escalation of violence between Hamas and Israel. God’s eye extends to the birds of the sky, where even the smallest sparrow is watched over and cared for. The divine recognizes the preciousness of every life. The lives of Palestinians and the lives of Israelis are precious in the eyes of God.

Along with many others, DPF understands that this conflict did not appear out of nowhere but is rooted in an ongoing system of apartheid and a fundamental imbalance of power between Israelis and Palestinians. Recognizing the complex interplay of collective trauma, despair, occupation, collective punishment, the rhetoric of resistance and the rhetoric of self-defense, DPF reaffirms our commitment to witness to the Prince of Peace and his way of nonviolence. While we hear that now is an inconvenient time to advocate for peace – that it is not practical and we should accept the ways of retribution and vengeance – we refuse to be silent.

We encourage all Disciples of Christ in the United States and Canada to call their elected leaders, urging them to demand an immediate ceasefire, de-escalation of violence, and the re-opening of humanitarian assistance into Gaza.

DPF Joins Faith Leaders in Call for Diplomacy and Nonviolent Resistance

In response to the ongoing war in Ukraine, Disciples Peace Fellowship joined more than 20 national and regional faith-based organizations to send a letter to President Biden and members of Congress urging the support and amplification of creative nonviolent resistance actions rather than maintaining the killing and escalation of war. The letter also urges the support and focus on a kind of diplomacy that is willing to compromise for the sake of saving lives.

In addition to DPF, the signatories include the Fellowship of Reconciliation (our parent organization) and other interfaith movements, as well as groups representing specific faith traditions — from Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and Protestant Christians to Hindus, Jains, Jews, Muslims, Zoroastrians, and more. In the letter the signers explain that, “The war in Ukraine is a spiritual, human, and ecological catastrophe. We have failed to escape the cycle of threats, blame, and retribution which escalates hostility and distrust. We have failed to engage diplomacy focused on the dignity and human needs of the key stakeholders, with a willingness to compromise, and a focus on saving lives. We have failed to adequately train people in nonviolent conflict, resistance and civilian-based defense. Let’s not make these mistakes again.”

The signers go on to explain the kinds of creative nonviolent actions that can help to break the cycles of violence and illuminate the way of just peace. They conclude that “the U.S. is positioned to contribute to ending the cycle of violence and ensuring a just and lasting peace. We urge you to choose that path.”

A Statement on Israel/Palestine

2021.06.03 Israel Palestine Statement.png
They have treated the wound of my people carelessly, saying, “Peace, peace,” when there is no peace.
— Jeremiah 6:14

As beloved children of God who proclaim that every life is precious, we thank God for a ceasefire, confessing how unlikely it is to hold.

As followers of Jesus we pray for peace, declaring that this is God’s desire for all creation.

As believers in human rights for all, once we have prayed for peace, we pray for justice, acknowledging that true shalom depends on promoting the well-being of every person.

As US Americans, once we have prayed for justice, we pray for forgiveness, confessing that we are complicit through our tax dollars and biased foreign policy.

As human beings, once we have prayed for forgiveness, we pray for reconciliation, knowing that we require a grace beyond anything we can will into existence on our own.

As leaders, members and friends of the Disciples Peace Fellowship, we mourn and rage over the recent violence in Gaza, the West Bank, and Israel.  We lament each life lost and every heart traumatized by this violence.  We condemn the attempted expulsions of Palestinian families in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of East Jerusalem.  We deplore the attacks on worshipers at the Al Aqsa Mosque.  We reject the cynicism that arises from realizing how much this current suffering is rooted in cold-hearted, political maneuvering by leaders desperate to hold onto power.  And we name that these provocations were not the beginning of this conflict.

We call on all Christians on Turtle Island to denounce the racist settler colonialism that has shaped Israeli policy toward Palestinians for decades, that has displaced hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from their homes, and caused indescribable suffering.  We issue this call confessing our own sinfulness, living ourselves on stolen land, our homeland the result of an earlier, yet ongoing genocide.

We urge all Christians on Turtle Island to educate ourselves on the roots of the current situation, which Israeli and other human rights groups have named as apartheid.  We invite you to join us in speaking up to shift the narrative about this conflict in our country, whose policies are so intertwined with the suffering there.  We encourage all Christians to reject the pernicious heresy of Christian Zionism.

We encourage everyone to contact their elected officials and ask them to stand for Palestinian human rights.  Ask them to support HR2590, which would stop US assistance from supporting the demolition of Palestinian homes, the annexation of Palestinian land, and the detention of Palestinian children in Israeli military prisons.  Ask them to demand conditions supporting human rights for all on US military aid to Israel.  Ask them to stop the sale of more arms to the Israeli government.

We also urge supporting Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions. We can work for peace and vote with our dollars by boycotting companies like Pillsbury, Sabra, Puma, Hewlett Packard, Ahava and other companies that profit from the Israeli occupation.

We commend the work of Week of Compassion to all Disciples and encourage designated gifts to WOC for the work being done by partners on the ground in Gaza, including Ahli Arab Hospital.  We give thanks for the witness of Global Ministries, whose partners have long stood alongside Palestinian and Israeli peacemakers.

We ask your prayers for Rachel Shomali and Minerva Halteh, the missionaries-in-residence who worked alongside our Peace Interns in the summer of 2016, and for their families, as they go about their lives in the West Bank.

As we pray that the ceasefire will hold, for a just peace, for forgiveness and reconciliation, let us confess that we must live out our prayers with action and advocacy.  May we not find solace in superficial calls for “peace” that treat the wounds of God’s people carelessly by neglecting to address the roots of the conflicts.  May we never again assume this is someone else’s problem, but rather a crisis impacting our own family.

Denouncing AAPI Violence and the Shootings in Atlanta

2021.03.26 Denouncing API Violence.png

Disciples Peace Fellowship joins in mourning the lives of those killed last week in the Atlanta spa shootings. We denounce the rise in violence against Asians and Asian Americans.

We join with our Asian American siblings to call for an immediate end to xenophobic and racist rhetoric, hate crimes and violence.

We call on the Church to stand in solidarity and love with all those who are targets of discrimination, misogyny, and violence.

We commit ourselves as followers of Christ to work towards the dismantling of white supremacy and the flourishing of justice, peace, and compassion.

We call for sensible gun control and demand that our leaders take responsibility for rebuilding our civil society, as a place where all are respected and valued.

Lamenting the Storming of the DC Capitol

2021.01.06 DC Capitol.png

Full Statement:

Disciples Peace Fellowship laments and is infuriated by today’s events in Washington, DC, where white nationalist extremists stormed and occupied the U.S. Capitol, and elsewhere in state capitols where similarly-minded events have occurred.

Today’s events are the culmination of centuries of militaristic, patriarchal, colonialist, and white supremacist rhetoric and actions against communities seeking justice and liberation for all.

As people of faith seeking to achieve a world in which the Gospel imperative for peace and justice is upheld, DPF stands with those who condemn today’s actions and are eager to work toward a world in which collective wellbeing is valued above individual power.

We commit to furthering conversations and taking action to dismantle these oppressive paradigms and uphold reparative, transformative relationships until liberation, peace, and justice for all are achieved.

We Grieve the Violence of White Supremacy Culture

We grieve the violence of White supremacy culture which pervades the institutions of this country - from our schools to our policing to our families to our churches. We speak out against the militarized response of police and government in response to a growing movement for the protection and sanctity of Black lives.

We ask our DPF supporters to stand for liberation in every way possible, including learning from, listening to, and supporting Black-led movements, thinkers, leaders, and organizations. Now is the time to show up and stay present.

Hiroshima Remembrance

On August 6th, 1945, the United States dropped a nuclear bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Three days later, the U.S. dropped another bomb on Nagasaki. To this day, the United States remains the only country to have used nuclear weapons in any situation.

On this 74th anniversary of those bombings, Disciples Peace Fellowship calls on all people to reject the use of nuclear weapons. Let us confess that we have allowed nuclear disarmament to fade from our attention, as if the threat these weapons pose to all creation were no longer present. Let us lament with those still living with the wounds of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

We denounce the recent decision by the Trump Administration to withdraw from the 1987 Inter-range Nuclear Force Treaty.

We call upon all elected and military officials to bring full pressure to bear to restrain the Pentagon from developing and testing the sorts of weapons that were prohibited by this treaty. We further call upon them to support and strengthen New START, the only remaining bilateral nuclear arms agreement between the U.S. and Russia.

Let us join in fervent prayer that dialogue and diplomacy
may yet lead us to a nuclear-free world.
Let us work together for a just peace for all God’s creation.

DPF Denounces the Proposed Budget for FY 2020

Disciples Peace Fellowship denounces the proposed budget for FY 2020 recently released by the Trump Administration. This budget demands $8.6 billion for a border wall, which would separate communities and destroy habitats, and increases military funding by 5% – more than what was originally requested by the Pentagon. The proposed budget also includes devastating cuts to domestic programs that support basic human rights, like Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, public education, the Environmental Protection Agency, and more. We will not achieve peace by building barriers and propping up weapons manufacturers. This budget itself, if enacted, would have a life-threatening impact on people all over the world.
